Saved job description
Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
Develop, revise, and optimize offline and online CMM programs using PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, and CALYPSO across bridge/gantry CMMs, ROMER Absolute Arms, and Hexagon OPTIV M multisensor systems
Program, set up, and operate coordinate measuring machines for complex aerospace components; define measurement strategies for new part introductions
Produce and standardize CMM set-up and operational instructions for specific parts or machines
Store all CMM data securely and maintain regular backups; own configuration control and revision management on program files and job records
Evaluate and improve legacy inspection programs; lead, mentor, and train CMM programmers and inspection personnel
Oversee inspection of incoming material, work-in-process, and final product for conformance to quality standards
Verify supplier-provided hardware against purchase orders, engineering drawings, and specifications
Lead preparation and disposition of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for nonconforming parts; present dimensional findings and recommendations to the MRB
Provide quality and metrology technical leadership, audit, inspection, problem identification/resolution, training, and expertise to manufacturing groups and suppliers
Review and approve inspection records for compliance with AS9100/ISO 9001 requirements
Lead and execute First Article Inspections per AS9102 standard
Verify all design characteristics, material certifications, manufacturing process verification, and nonconformance resolution during FAI
Define FAI strategies and execute inspections for new parts, design changes, process changes, and after long production lapses
Utilize CMMs, OPTIV M multisensor systems, ROMER arms, 3D scanners, hand tools, and other testing equipment for FAI verification
Lead metrology support for PPAP submissions to validate that production processes can consistently meet requirements
Drive digitization efforts for PPAP and FAI as quality gates in aerospace manufacturing
A day in the life
This role will work daily to:
Own the end-to-end CMM programming function across all metrology platforms (bridge/gantry CMMs, ROMER Absolute Arms, Hexagon OPTIV M multi-sensor systems) — develop, validate, and maintain inspection programs while establishing programming standards, revision control processes, and best practices for the metrology team
Serve as the metrology technical lead interfacing with Quality, Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Supplier Quality teams — drive metrology input into new product development, define inspection strategies for incoming hardware, and support supplier PPAP correlation activities
Lead dimensional root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for non-conforming hardware — perform detailed CMM analysis to isolate failure modes, author nonconformance reports, and present findings with data-driven recommendations to the Material Review Board (MRB)
Mentor and develop CMM programmers, machine operators, and inspection personnel — conduct training on programming techniques, multi-sensor workflows, GD&T interpretation, and software proficiency across PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, and CALYPSO
Drive continuous improvement of metrology processes through Lean methodology — identify opportunities to reduce inspection cycle times, improve measurement repeatability, and optimize CMM utilization across the receiving inspection operation
About the team
The Amazon Leo Receiving Quality team is driven to develop an Amazon Leo Quality System that is capable of scaling aerospace quality to volume and cost levels to meet end customer needs. This position will join the team at an exciting moment, with an opportunity to own quality system development and contribute to the design of requirements, processes, and systems used across the business. We value data driven decision making, a comfort with dealing in ambiguous situations across multiple projects, and an ability to earn trust of various stakeholders to deliver high quality results.
Requirements: - 6+ years CMM programming experience (PC-DMIS specifically)
- Extensive experience performing FAI per AS9102
- Expert in reading/interpreting blueprints with GD&T per ASME Y14.5M
- Experience with receiving inspection of aerospace components
- Knowledge of AS9100/ISO 9001 quality management systems
- Experience with tight-tolerance, high-value aerospace components
- Fluent in precision hand tools, gages, optical comparators, and surface plate work
- Experience documenting and tracking discrepancy/non-conformance reports
- Calibration management experience
- Demonstrated experience programming multiple Hexagon metrology platforms including bridge/gantry CMMs, ROMER Absolute Arm portable CMMs, and OPTIV M multisensor CMMs (Vision+, Scan+, or DualScan+ variants)
- Experience developing multisensor inspection programs that combine vision, tactile, and/or laser measurement within a single measurement routine
- Proficiency with additional metrology software platforms such as PolyWorks Inspector and/or ZEISS CALYPSO
- Experience developing and maintaining CMM program libraries, revision control processes, and standardized inspection documentation across multiple metrology platforms
- Experience leading, mentoring, and training CMM programmers and inspection personnel on advanced programming techniques, multisensor workflows, and best practices
