Saved job description
The Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) is on a mission to build a useful quantum computers. Central to this mission is our semiconductor fabrication clean room, where microfabrication processes are used to produce superconducting qubit chips. We are seeking a Senior Safety Engineer to own and drive the safety program for our fabrication facility, ensuring world-class safety performance while enabling rapid innovation and production throughput.
This is a high-visibility, high-impact role where you will be the single-threaded owner of safety across all clean room operations — from chemical handling and hazardous gas systems to tool safety interlocks and emergency response. You will partner closely with process engineers, equipment engineers, facilities teams, and leadership to embed a culture of safety that scales with our growing fabrication capabilities.
In this role, you won't just be maintaining safety — you'll be building the safety framework for a first-of-its-kind quantum device fabrication facility. This is a rare opportunity to shape safety culture from the ground up in an environment where world-class science meets world-class engineering. Your work will directly enable the teams pushing the boundaries of quantum computing.
Key job responsibilities
Own the Clean Room Safety Program: Develop and continuously improve the EHS program across all fab operations — CVD, PVD, etch, wet chemistry, lithography, and metrology.
Chemical & Hazardous Materials Management: Manage chemical hygiene plans, hazardous gas monitoring, and inventory controls for corrosives (HF, H₂SO₄), solvents, photoresists, and specialty gases (BCl₃, Cl₂, SF₆, silane).
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 318/70E, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and local fire codes. Manage permits, inspections, and filings.
Risk Assessment: Conduct JHAs, PHAs, and MOC reviews for new tools, process changes, and chemical introductions.
Emergency Response: Develop and drill emergency procedures for chemical spills, gas leaks, fire, and seismic events. Maintain all response equipment and PPE stations.
Tool & Equipment Safety: Partner with equipment engineers on safety interlocks, LOTO procedures, and maintenance of gas cabinets, exhaust, and abatement systems.
Training & Culture: Deliver safety training (onboarding, refreshers, chemical-specific, PPE) and foster a culture of proactive hazard reporting.
Incident Management & Metrics: Lead RCA for all incidents and near-misses. Track and report safety KPIs to fab leadership.
Contractor Safety: Manage safety requirements for vendors and contractors, including hot work and confined space permits
Requirements: - 7+ years of increasing responsibilities in EHS or environmental programs in manufacturing, production, or service operations experience, or Bachelor's degree
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, specifically 29 CFR 1910
- 3+ years of demonstrating safety standards experience
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Experience conducting safety assessments/reviews (e.g., JHAs, PHAs, and MOC) in a manufacturing or laboratory setting
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs
- 5+ years of experience in semiconductor fabrication, microelectronics manufacturing, or comparable clean room environments
